Life is Beautiful with a Concrete Patio

One of the first things that come to mind when the word “patio” (some call it a porch) is mentioned is relaxation. It might be your favorite area to lounge in on a comfortable seat and soak up some sun, especially if it leads up to your pool. Or it’s where you enjoy the breeze on a loved rocking chair. It might be the perfect place to entertain friends while you catch up on each other’s lives over a few drinks. It might even be your favorite venue for family gatherings while you enjoy Sunday steaks and barbecue over the fire pit.

For these reasons, some homeowners will tell you a home isn’t complete without a patio.

A patio is an extension of your living space. It’s where you find serenity and the feeling of belonging without being confined to walls. It makes you feel free and safe at the same time.

So if life happens on a patio, it should be built to last and styled to your taste.

Slab or Concrete Patio Pavers?

Outdoor spaces are exposed to sun, wind, snow, and rain. Therefore they should outlast all these weather conditions.

If you’re considering your budget, concrete slabs give you value for your money. Pouring a concrete patio means 3 to 4 inches of slab with about 4500 psi concrete. That’s the same strength and thickness that a concrete driveway has. Considering you’re not going to run a vehicle through it day in and day out, your concrete patio will certainly last for at least 20 years.

If it has the design you like, there’s even less reason to spend for upkeep and repair. They can be stained with color using an acid treatment or dye. They can be made to look like any expensive surface such as marble, slate, tile, or stone.

Concrete stamped patio costs are a little higher than the ordinary slab depending on the design. Some only have a single color with one pattern throughout. The most expensive of which may involve hand-applied stains on custom patterns that result in realistic and vividly colored finishes.

Slabs also need little to no maintenance for a long time. And you’ll only need to wash it and clean it with a nylon brush or pressure wash it to remove dirt, mold, and debris. Certain finishes will require sealer reapplication every 5 to 7 years to keep it looking new and resistant to freezing climate.

On the other hand, you may be offered concrete patio pavers if you wish for longevity. Pavers are even more durable and easier to repair than a slab as only the broken piece is taken out and replaced. Whereas with a slab, you’ll either have to level, resurface, or replace it after a complete tear-out if and when it cracks.

Concrete patio pavers can also withstand 3 to 4 times the weight of a slab. And they’re naturally slip-resistant, whereas you need to apply the right coat to a slab to have the same effect.

Another advantage of using concrete patio pavers is their ability to reduce flooding by letting rainwater and moisture seep in between the stones. This reduces the incidence of freeze-thawing dramatically, and in turn, preserves the material.

But because of the more intensive labor involved in its installation, pavers are costlier upfront. Sometimes, prices may reach up to double the cost to pour concrete patios upfront.

But it’s well worth it. Some estimate concrete patio pavers to add about 50% value to your home. And it lasts twice as long as slabs.

It’s a long-term investment that will pay off in time. And the look will never go out of style. Just look at the many classic styles and colors of interlocking pavers. You can even play with these colors and follow your home’s design, or go original and create your own.

But the initial price is why some homeowners choose stamped concrete with a paver design instead. They get the beauty of pavers while paying only for concrete stamped patio costs.

So it’s up to you which of these concrete products you choose for your patio. You can even combine both elements. Just know that whichever you pick, you’ll be getting your money’s worth.

Spice Up a Concrete Patio… The Right Way!

Some of our customers already have a patio, but they want it upgraded.

If you’re not happy with an old, tired-looking concrete patio, a DIY upgrade and styling will save you money. But if you want the upgrade to be long-lasting and sure, have Rochester Hills Concrete do it for you.

Here are some of the things we can do to modernize and breathe fresh life into your old patio:

We can resurface and seal it. Rochester Hills Concrete has a resurfacing technology that creates a durable and wear-resistant layer that costs only a fraction of a complete replacement. If you want to know more about this service, you can read about it on our page here. [internal link to concrete repair and resurfacing page] We can add a design or simply seal it with the coating you prefer.

Coatings help keep concrete patios dry. Water and moisture that seeps into the concrete bring with them dirt and particles that over time will weaken the material. That’s why sealing is important.

Concrete sealers may either be penetrating, acrylic, polyurethanes, and epoxies.

A penetrating sealer is used if you want effective waterproofing without altering the concrete patio’s appearance. They seep through the holes of the concrete for effective moisture and water repelling but are porous enough to allow water through. We usually recommend a water-based, penetrating sealer with low VOCs.

Acrylics and polyurethanes are quick-drying sealers that apply a thin film on top of your concrete. It leaves a sheen that makes the surface of the concrete patio look shiny. It can enhance the color of stamped, dyed, or exposed aggregate surfaces. This type of sealer can also be used on pool decks.

The glossy finish you usually see in garages and mall parking lots are epoxy sealants. This type can become slippery when wet, so an additive is used to provide traction on its surface.

We can add a stamped design. Stamped concrete involves adding color and a stamped pattern on the surface of the concrete. Choose the design and we’ll make it happen for you. As we mentioned above, one of those designs can make your concrete patio look like actual pavers.

A sure conversational piece is a concrete overlay design that resembles wood planks. The design is so realistic and the wood grains so intricate that guests are always impressed. The process involves pouring several layers of texture coat over your existing concrete patio flooring, sanding, coloring, and making even grout lines in between so they’d look like planks. Then the design is sealed.

We can stain it with any color or colors that you like. While some don’t like stamped designs, they do like color.

We can spray the acid stain, scrub it in, let it sit for several hours, and then apply a neutralizer to wash the acid off. For more intricate designs, we can stencil and hand-stain borders, accents, and more.

We can add some lines. A plain slab over a wide space doesn’t really catch anyone’s interest, does it? How about adding some interesting lines to spruce it up?

We have the proper tools to saw cut lines on concrete patio flooring to simply create joints that are about a quarter-inch deep. Remember, these are not structural lines but only decorative, so we don’t need to go all the way through.

We can go ahead and create geometric patterns. We even have a circular saw to create a medallion or compass rose. We have done saw-cut flowers and swirls for borders for some customers. If you want your business logo cut and colored on the floor, we can do that, too.

To make the designs come alive, we will stain and seal them.
